What we do

Liberal Alternative Institute-LAI is a NGO established as a response to society’s grassroots needs for an alternative voice based on liberal activism. Founded in 2012 in Tetovo, Macedonia, it provides an innovative approach to already much discussed topics in the lights of democracy, good governance and social activism.
The alternative LAI offers stems from the international experience of the founding members whose ideas blend the western liberal thought with the traditional local values.
The projects we work on are driven by two main components: Inter-disciplinarily which brings together different disciplines that enhance each other in explaining an issue and providing a solution for it, and Multi-perceptivity, which forms basis for unbiasedness and transparency. We currently focus on three programs: Human Rights & Freedoms, Youth & Social Inclusion and Employability & Entrepreneurship

The mission of the Liberal Alternative Institute is to encourage citizens of the Republic of North Macedonia to participate in creative activities through a variety of project programs, with the goal of educating, improving, and equipping them with knowledge on how to become engaged citizens in an increasingly diverse and changing world.

Our mission is guided by the values that underpin liberal foundational principles.

As civil society actors, we strive to emphasize the following in our work:

  • Community: As professionals, researchers, and engaged citizens, we understand our connectivity with both local and global communities, as well as our responsibility to enhance the places in which we live.
  • Diversity and Inclusiveness: We promote a culture of intellectual and personal inclusion that goes beyond simple labels and allows people to comprehend and negotiate the wide diversity of perspectives, experiences, and traditions that are necessary for living ethically in a globalized world.
  • Innovation and Creativity: LAI is characterized by innovation, creativity, treasured traditions, and diversity. Our NGO is at the forefront of projects and programs promoting liberal thought throughout our local and regional communities
